Reflection Reading
Book: The Four Marks of Fatherly Greatness
Author: Devin Schadt
Pillar: Pillar 2 – Embrace Your Essence (Embracing Woman)
Reading: 68. God's Plan for Your Marriage
Pages: 181–182

The reading centres on one of the greatest gifts—and one of the greatest challenges—of marriage: learning to truly know and communicate one another's deepest needs.
Schadt reminds us that communication is much more than exchanging information. Genuine communication leads to communion. If a husband does not understand his own authentic needs, or if he never learns to understand the needs of his wife, true communion becomes difficult to achieve.
Rather than seeing husband and wife as competitors or opposites, God's design is that their different needs complement one another. Marriage is therefore not simply about living together, but about helping one another become the gift that God intends each spouse to be.
The reading draws heavily from Saint John Paul II's Theology of the Body, reminding us that man becomes the image of God most fully not in isolation but in communion with another person. In marriage, spouses are invited to participate in God's own self-giving love.
"Man... cannot fully find himself except through a sincere gift of self." (Gaudium et Spes, 24)
Call to Action
The practical invitation from this reading is straightforward but deeply challenging.
Spend intentional time alone with your wife.
Create an environment where both spouses can speak honestly about their hearts without fear of criticism or defensiveness. Rather than assuming we know what our wives need, we are invited to ask, listen carefully, and remain patient, even when the conversations become difficult.
As the author notes, such conversations may initially "open a can of worms," but they are often the beginning of deeper trust and greater communion.
For fathers, this means leading first through attentive listening, humble service and sincere self-giving, following the example of Christ, who loved the Church by giving Himself completely.
Reflection Associated with the Reading
The accompanying examination of conscience encourages husbands to reflect honestly on how they love their wives.
Some of the questions challenge us to consider whether we honour our wives as daughters of God, whether we build them up with our words, whether we become defensive when corrected, and whether we are willing to sacrifice our own pride and selfishness for their good.
Shared Thoughts from the Group
The challenge of living the faith when our wives are at a different stage in their spiritual journey.
How to respond with patience and love when our faith is misunderstood or criticised at home.
The importance of witnessing our faith through humility, consistency and example, rather than arguments.
How to encourage our children in the faith while preserving unity and peace within the family.
The reminder that children often learn more from how we love their mother than from what we say about God.
Trusting God's timing and persevering in prayer, recognising that each family member's spiritual journey unfolds differently.
Personal Reflections & Final Thought
This reading resonated deeply with my own experience of marriage. Over the years, I have come to see that the differences between my wife and me are not obstacles but part of God's design. Marriage is a vocation of service, calling me not only to lead but to love, serve and care for my wife as Christ loves His Church.
Looking back, I can see how my wife has helped me overcome selfishness, mature as a husband and father, deepen my faith, and recognise my own limitations. The challenges we face have become opportunities for growth. Together, we complement one another, and our children benefit whenever we strive to walk this journey of faith side by side.
May Saint Joseph teach us to love our wives with humility, patience and quiet strength, so that our homes may reflect Christ's self-giving love.
